About Volt Trails & the data behind it
Volt Trails is an independent directory of public EV charging stations across the United States. The goal is boring on purpose: show what's actually out there, fast, without an app or a login.
Where the data comes from
Every listing is drawn from the U.S. DOE / NREL Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC), distributed through the USDOT Bureau of Transportation Statistics — National Transportation Atlas Database (NTAD). That dataset is a U.S. Government Work in the public domain — the terms state it "may be used for any purpose." Station records are maintained by the networks and site hosts themselves and updated frequently. See the source dataset ↗
What we include
We show public, operational, electric stations only (we filter out private, planned, and non-EV fuel stations at the source). We retrieved the data on July 26, 2026. At that time the directory listed 80,328 stations across 52 states and territories — the complete set of public + operational EV stations AFDC reported nationwide (52 of 52 states matched AFDC's live count exactly at fetch time). How we're honest about limits
- We never invent stations, reviews, or ratings. Missing fields are shown as "not reported," not padded.
- "Free" and pricing reflect exactly what the operator reported to the DOE — always confirm on site.
- Each listing shows when it was last confirmed in the source so you can judge freshness.
How this site is funded
Volt Trails is free to use. It's supported by clearly-labeled advertising and by Amazon affiliate links on genuinely-relevant gear. Self-serve paid listings for station owners are planned but not yet live — no payments are collected today.
